Hi.

Welcome to my blog! I hope you enjoy my passion project documenting travel, home remodel/decor and all things to do on a Sunday in San Diego.

1912 Bathroom update

1912 Bathroom update

Sometimes touch ups are simply like putting lipstick on a pig. Looks pretty, but does not get to the root of the problem.

Thats how our bathroom felt to me. It was fine. Just fine. Nothing great, did the trick. But that’s no way to live. Let’s face it. We spend alot of time in our bathrooms. Don’t ask what we do, but we do it and we should enjoy it.

We pondered and pondered and schemed to come up with the best scenario. Whats really worth doing? This is not our forever home. We intend to either rent out or sell one day. How can we meet our needs now for the next months or maybe even years.

The design is simple. Work with what we have, yet bring in updated items. Timeless yet modern. Thats a style right?

Concerns & Wishes:

  1. Take attention away from floor tile

  2. Blend Nickel & Matte Black fixtures

  3. Match flooring grout to backsplash tile and kitchen grout. Pick light grout that will withstand dirt and soap scum

  4. Add character to match style of home

  5. Address storage issue

  6. Tie in existing design elements ( existing vanity and countertop)

So here’s what we came up with

To Do:

  1. Add new 20 inch high bathtub - we selected one from Kohler

  2. Tile surrounding bathtub & add shampoo shelf

  3. Take attention away from tile flooring and match grout to shower

  4. Add bead board, chair rail & new baseboards

  5. Add new toilet

  6. Add new circular medicine cabinet with storage

  7. Paint new bead board/trim

  8. Accessorize with new World Market shower curtain & towels

Here is our final product

Added bead board and new molding

Small changes you can make to have a big impact:

  • New shower curtain and liner

  • New matching towels and bathmat

  • Add accessories like a potted plant, candle and even art

  • Change out your light bulb to a warm lumen. You want to see, but do not need to be blinded

  • Touch up your trim and baseboards with fresh paint

  • Upgrade your hand soap and lotion to match

existing vanity

New mirror and linens

The final result is a more functional space that is timeless and better suited for our family. Having a tub your tall husband can actually fit in, and your baby can almost swim in is a game changer. Not much beats a bath at the end of the day. I like to add wine.
